Brooklyn artist Public Speaking’s new album “It’s Okay to Have Fun” is anti-fascist synth pop for dystopian times. This is electronic pop built on odd time signature grooves and the low crooning vocals of Jason Anthony Harris. 90’s electronica, early video game scores, and prog-influenced song structures meet contemporary dance music and 21st century art rock. The songs attempt to express what it feels like to live under the precipitous rise of fascism and how it chips away at one’s humanity. Is joy and fun even possible surrounded by all this terror, and how does one help? The music delivering these questions is frantic and disconcerting, yet playful and fun.
