Uppers, Downers, and All-Arounders marks the sixth album from Denver-based singer/songwriter Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt, and it's an expansive, lush leap forward. Intro track "Waiting For" is peak Hypocrite: a lackadaisical pop banger set against lovely flourishes of pedal steel guitar and some surprisingly existential lyrics.

From the Real Estate-inspired guitar interplay of "Content" to the piano-heavy "Compete with God" — which interweaves '90s Britpop melodies with guest drummer Billy Coughlin's syncopated rhythms — the album finds Hypocrite experimenting with new sounds without abandoning his strong pop sensibilities.

"It had a lot of collaboration with friends," Hypocrite says. "It was me trying to push outside of my element, getting more friends involved, and less isolation." The result is the artist's most cohesive work to date.
